Add an alias to your assets
🎉 What's new
Technical name or alias — Atlan now gives you the power of choice to decide the asset name you'd like to be displayed more prominently.
Want to add business context to an asset with a cryptic technical name? You can now add aliases to your assets in Atlan or use Atlan AI to do the same! Want your business users to only view aliases and technical users to view technical names instead? Atlan also allows you to set asset name display preferences for your personas.
✨ Let's dig deeper
An asset with a technical name like STL_TRDS_STTL
can make you go from scratching your head to clear comprehension with the alias Trades Settlement
. Any non-guest user with edit access to an asset's metadata can add an alias to provide quick and easy business context.
Once you have added an alias to your asset, you can:
- Search for assets by their technical name or alias, Atlan will match on the most relevant option and highlight the keyword match in the search results.
- Use the Title property filter to filter for assets either by technical names or aliases.
- Set asset name display preferences for your personas, choose whether you'd like the technical name or alias to be displayed more prominently for specific personas.
- View aliases in search results, asset preview, asset profile, asset sidebar, and lineage graph.
- Adding an alias is currently supported for the following asset types — tables, dynamic tables, views, materialized views, columns, and dbt models.
Note that the Insights query editor will only show assets with their technical name. If an alias has been added, you can view it from the asset sidebar.
