Enhancements in downloading lineage to Google Sheets

Understanding the changes to an asset and their impact are critical to building trust in your data assets. For instance, changes to an upstream asset can impact downstream data pipelines and dashboards, potentially causing disruption in an organization.

With this release, we bring to you the following enhancements:

  • The option to download upstream assets, downstream assets, or both in Google Sheets.
  • The ability to document metadata for impacted assets in Google Sheets and sync the changes back to Atlan. Atlan currently supports documenting descriptions, certificates, announcements, and owners for impacted assets.

Note: The Download Impact Analysis button has been renamed Download Lineage.

Classification propagation settings in playbooks

Atlan playbooks help data teams create rule-based automations for asset enrichment, such as attaching classifications. With this update, users will now have increased flexibility in controlling how classifications are propagated for their assets.

As we continue to enhance playbook capabilities, we've now added the option to control propagation when attaching classifications as an action. This gives admin users the ability to control how classifications are propagated.

  • Existing playbooks — default propagation setting is set to false. When editing an existing playbook, users will have the option to change the propagation rules.
  • New playbooks — default propagation setting is set to true.

Chrome extension support for Sigma

Before the Chrome extension for Sigma was available, users had to switch to Atlan for additional details about a data element — for example, who owns it and whether it is certified or not. With the Chrome extension support for Sigma release, all of this and more is now possible without leaving your favourite Sigma workspace.

Atlan’s Chrome extension for Sigma opens up a sidebar within the Sigma workspace and provides you with all the context you need without having to switch tools.

Descriptions get a power upgrade — Markdown support

Descriptions are one of the most important metadata for any asset. Our users love the metadata sync from their sources to Atlan, and this upgrade will power sync capabilities even further.

Our users often use rich formats like Markdown when adding documentation to their assets — for example, through dbt. Such text formatting was not carried over in Atlan, resulting in poor readability.

We've enhanced Atlan’s description editor to support Markdown syntax. Descriptions in Markdown will now be retained in Atlan and appear in the asset sidebar, asset profile, and other areas — significantly improving readability.

Capturing project hierarchy for Tableau assets

Tableau supports nested project hierarchies, which were not visible as asset metadata during asset discovery. This led to ambiguity around project hierarchy, especially when multiple projects with the same name had different hierarchies.

Nested project hierarchy metadata is now available in Atlan!

  • View nested project hierarchy on the project search card and Overview sidebar for easy identification.
  • Click on the project name in the hierarchy to get details on the parent folders for quick discovery and context.

For example, if there are multiple projects with the same name Product Analytics nested within the Website, Mobile-iOS, and Mobile-Android project hierarchies, a user searching for Product Analytics in Atlan will now have additional context with the project hierarchy metadata available during discovery.

Based on the feedback received, we will continue making other enhancements — such as adding nested hierarchies for Tableau dashboards — to create an even better discovery experience for BI assets.

Custom metadata linked assets

Previously, admins who created custom metadata from the governance center could not view the linked assets this custom metadata is associated with. With this new enhancement, admins will get the required visibility to the linked asset of custom metadata.

The summary section of the overview tab can now be edited

Whether it is a table or dashboard, model or metric, columns, and glossaries, every data asset is a first-class citizen in Atlan with its own unique 360° profile.  From a unique URL for each asset down to the business metadata like a description, owners, business terms, and more.

While the Atlan sidebar has always been the go-to place for editing the metadata for each asset, we wanted to extend that functionality to the asset overview section.  Now, users can add/update a description, certification, or owner directly in the asset overview and all of the changes will instantly translate to the asset profile in the Atlan sidebar.

Scheduled queries enhancements

Atlan Insights brings two enhancements to the SQL editor that will improve the query management experience.

Pause scheduled queries

Users will have the ability to pause a scheduled trigger from executing till the underlying query is updated and approved.  This will prevent stale results from being sent. It will also reduce data costs as frequently scheduled queries will not run till the underlying query is fixed and the schedule is resumed.

Run scheduled queries anytime

Users will have the ability to run a scheduled query anytime using the “Run Now” option. This will be useful in cases where a scheduled run did not execute and teams will not have to wait till the next trigger is executed.

Enhancements to the Assets Dashboard

The Atlan Reporting Center provides a bird's-eye view of all the metadata updates in Atlan through visualizations to help you track adoption, curation, and metadata management. The Assets dashboard monitors and provides insights into all of the assets within your data estate, from tables to columns to certifications, connections, owners, and more.  One of the things we have heard from our customers is that they want more flexibility in asset filtering, but also the ability to track lineage.  Well, we heard you loud and clear with two new enhancements.

The new multi-select filter support for asset type and database schema gives users the ability to track progress on certain subsets/combinations of assets like views + tables or tables within schemas.

A new metric to track lineage completion on your Atlan assets will give customers the ability to track lineage coverage for all assets even column level.

Enhancements to the Assets Dashboard

Multi-Select Filter Support: We’ve heard from customers that having the ability to track progress on certain subsets/combinations of assets like views+ tables or tables within a couple of schemas is helpful.

Now we have added multi-select support on:

  1. Asset Type filter
  2. Db/Schema Filter

A new metric to track Lineage coverage: Track lineage completion on your Atlan assets in the Assets Dashboard. Using this customers will be able to track lineage coverage for all assets even column level! Use our filters to get more granular!

Native connector for Azure Synapse Analytics

Synapse Analytics is an integrated platform service from Microsoft Azure that combines the capabilities of data warehousing, data integrations, ETL pipelines, and analytics tools. The Azure Synapse Analytics package further expands our investments into the Azure ecosystem giving data teams the context required to access Synapse assets. The following capabilities are delivered as part of the Azure Synapse Analytics connector:

  • Ability to configure this as a connector from the Atlan marketplace.
  • Discover Azure Synapse assets (databases, schemas, tables, and columns) in Atlan.
  • Preview tables through Sample Data
  • Write queries on Synapse Analytics through Insights.

The image below shows how you will see Azure Synapse assets in your search experience
